Youth Mental Health Support

Why Youth Mental Health is so important to me:

This year's Bell Let's Talk Day theme is Youth Mental Health, something that I am extremely passionate about and currently what I do for my day-to-day job - offering up to 6 solutions focused sessions to work on wellness goals, conducting mental health workshops for schools and other community partners, as well as the youth in K/W and Cambridge. I thought today was a great day to share more about myself and journey as a youth, and why youth mental health is so important to me.

Here is a little bit more about me:

I am passionate about mindfulness, wellness, and authenticity, which has helped me move through life’s challenges and reduce suffering the most, allowing for connection, creativity, and joy. I am on a mission to help others live connected to themselves, removing barriers, leaning into strengths, and increasing overall holistic wellness.

Fun Facts:

  • I am obsessed with my mini golden doodle, Terra! She inspires me to take care and live in the moment.

  • I love to travel, be immersed in nature & push myself out of my comfort zone to grow and experience new things.

  • Being in band was my favorite part of high school – my main instrument was the oboe as it was the most unique to me.

Youth mental health is so important to me because it is such a tender time of growth and exploration. Youth are setting foundations and rooting themselves in their beliefs and values as they learn about them. With this, I believe that youth are very impressionable, and despite their quest for autonomy and independence, they want to fit in and be desired in their environments, which can conflict with their authentic selves and cause disruption and disconnection. I know that this is something that I experienced as a kid with ADHD and other mental health challenges, as people where either unaware of what I was going through, or too scared to talk about - and so I ‘masked’ my pain, tried to adapt myself to fit in and push past or numb my symptoms, and suffered alone until I hit breaking points that were no longer able to be pushed past or ignored, leading me to forced visits with doctors, counsellors, and hospital programs during elementary school (Gr.7/8 were the worst for me). My parents went through many challenges of their own as I grew up, and I became more rebellious and “acted out,” so the teachers at school didn’t want to connect with me and instead added to my disconnection and hopelessness. After meeting with the right supports and learning to manage my emotions so that I can process my experiences, work through my triggers and take care and learn more about myself, things got a lot better. This journey is not meant to be one that anyone goes on alone. However, not everyone has the support they deserve to help make sense of the changes and challenges life may bring. We need someone to deeply listen to our needs and dreams, and support us in creating a plan that highlights our unique strengths and tends to our needs. It is a pleasure to meet any youth at any stage, and I am committed to offering whatever support I can to help them be the best versions of themselves.
