What is a “SMART goal”?

SMART is an acronym for the different things to consider when setting a goal, so that you actually achieve and feel good about it. It’s 2024, and those “new year new me” resolutions are ramped up with unrealistic, leading to unattainable goal setting, leading to disappointment. Lets skip the shame, call in compassion and discipline and create goals that are SMART.. let’s break down what each letter means.

S.M.A.R.T:

S is for specific. When making a goal, you want to get down to the nitty gritty details and get as specific as you possibly can. What is at the heart of this goal?

M is measurable. This gives us a system to measure the goal so that we can track progress and know when it has been achieved, like creating short term goals so you know exactly how you are going to get to your goal.

A is for attainable. You want to be sure that the goal you are setting is hopeful, while being something you are fully capable of achieving. How can you set your self up for success?

R is for realistic. When setting your goal, it is important to consider the resources you already have (skills, time, money, support).

T is for timely. It is important that time is considered when planning your goals. Do you have enough time to get this done by your desired deadline?
